How do I edit the DOS exit screens?

This guide will take you through the tools for editing the DOS end screens in ChaosEdit.

Some elements of this guide assumes you have a fresh project based on the full version of Wolfenstein 3D. If not, get started by clicking here.

At the top of the ChaosEdit window is a series of tabs, which let you navigate to each section of the Editor.

To edit the DOS End Screens, you will need to access the Screens tab.

Open ChaosEdit and load your project by clicking the Load All button and navigating to your project files.

All the editing will take place from this one tab.

This will switch between the different end screens (By default, one for exiting the game and one for when it crashes out with an error).

This is where you can directly edit the End Screen. Clicking on it will directly edit the screen.

For lack of a better word, these are the “paints” used on the Canvas. You can select the ASCII symbol to put on the screen, as well as the colour of the symbol and it's background.
Symbols can be bound to either right or left click.

  • Import Screen:
  • Export Screen:

  • Pen Tool: This tool will paint over any tile you click on the canvas, with whatever you have selected in the Paints.
  • Select Tool: This will change the selected Paints to whatever is in the tile you click on the Canvas.
  • Fill: This tool will fill a selected area with whatever is selected in Paints.
  • Rectangle Selection: This will select an area on the Canvas to edit in bulk with other tools.

  • Text: This will bring up an input window to enter text into. Doing so will create a stamp tool that will let you paste the entire phrase onto the Canvas.
  • Colorflow: This button is enabled when Rectangle Selection is used. Clicking it will present four options for the direction of the gradient, the colour of which is decided by the LeftClick color in Paints.
  • Rect/Border: This button is enabled when Rectangle Selection is used. Clicking it will present two potions. The Filled Rectangle does not appear to work, but Border will bring up a window with a smaller version of the Canvas and Paints to customize the appearance of the border and interior of the rectangle.

  • Edit Colors: When this toggle is on, clicking on a space on the Canvas will change the color of the ASCII symbol on that tile.
  • Edit Text: When this toggle is on, clicking on a space on the Canvas will change the ASCII symbol on the tile without changing background colors.
  • Blink:
  • Bright Colors: Enables some extra colours in the backing palette.

  • Cut: This button is enabled when Rectangle Selection is used. When used, it will copy the selected rectangle onto the clipboard while also deleting it from the Canvas.
  • Copy: This button is enabled when Rectangle Selection is used. When used, it will copy the selected rectangle onto the clipboard.
  • Paste: This button is enabled when Rectangle Selection is used. When used, this will paste whatever section of the screen you have copied to the clipboard. If there is none, nothing will be pasted.

If you make any edits to the screens, you can save the changes to your game by either pressing the Save All Changes button or the Save VGAGraph button.
