How do I set up a new project in ChaosEdit?

For more questions about ChaosEdit, click here.

ChaosEdit is another all-round Wolf3D editor, this one developed by Moritz Kroll (Aka Ripper). Unfortunately, he left the community before finishing the project (Leaving it in beta, with bugs), but it's unique features and simple UI have kept it a popular choice of editor.

This guide will show you how to start a new modding project with ChaosEdit.

  1. If you haven't, download ChaosEdit here. Extract it to a new folder.
  2. Open it. You should see the following window:

Unfortunately the website it displays is no longer functional, but used to be the website for ChaosEdit, Wolf4SDL, and Ripper's other projects.
  3. ChaosEdit has a series of buttons listed on the left hand side of the window. Each of these buttons load individual files for the game, if you wish to only mod a specific part of the game (Such as if you were only planning to edit some sprites). To load a full project, click the Load All button
  4. A small window should appear. Simply navigate to the folder with the copy of Wolfenstein 3D files you wish to edit, and click Okay. A new popup should appear, that looks similar to the following:

When you select the files, ChaosEdit auto-detects the files and the version of Wolfenstein 3D you're using (as in, whether it's Spear of Destiny, Wolfenstein 3D, or another game) and fills in all boxes automatically.
  5. Click Load All. ChaosEdit should now look similar to the following, meaning you've loaded everything ready for editing!
